My first big assignment at Aspen Magazine was to coordinate the Holiday 2010 cover and feature fashion shoot.

Editor-in-Chief Janet O’Grady wanted a white winter cover, but we were in the middle of a warm October Indian Summer. I met photographer Keith Lathrop at the airport—he flew in from New York City with his assistant and model—to discuss the situation. Fortunately, we had a day to scout before getting down to the business of shooting.

Keith and I found a number of locations around town where he could find traces of snow to include in the background. On the day of the cover shoot, we headed up to the top of Independence Pass before dawn. Though it was hardly a powder day in Aspen, we were able to cull together a handful of shots with snow in the background.

Ultimately, we focused on the glamour of Aspen shooting in front of Dior, at the Baldwin Gallery, and on the Ajax Tavern terrace—the image that would become the cover.
